Link: Jonathan Beckett: Thoughts on the Verizon iPhone
I’ve been reading the news story about the Verizon iPhone with interest over the last few weeks - and wondering why huge swathes of America went down the route of CDMA mobile networks.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, it boils down to this - a Verizon iPhone will pretty much only work…
Apple put the newish Qualcomm MDM6600 chip that allows for both CMDA and GSM networks to function via one radio. My bet is that we’ll see this chip in the iPhone 5 and only one phone for both networks. I don’t disagree that they probably had to entice Apple with some money but for all the people that are buying them now Verizon is making some moola and for the people that are waiting for the iPhone 5 they will make even more via early upgrades and AT&T abandoner’s. And I may be wrong but I believe there are very large portions of India and China that are swathed in CMDA allowing Apple to gain even more market.
